Northland Guides' programme plan for 1997!

Here's what we have planned - but things will probably change :) :) It's being updated as we plan each term.

06 Feb - Waitangi Day - Welcome back meeting
Hold Patrol Leader elections, and do some group planning for the term. Do a couple of technology clauses.

(Preparatory to doing First Aid badge later in term).

March / Maehe

06 Mar
We had awful weather and had to postpone our weka walk to next week. No Guides.
13 Mar
Weka Walk in local wildlife sanctuary.
A weka is a native bird (Gallirallus australis - part of the Rallidae family). They are flightless, inquisitive and run very fast when they want to. They are a fairly squat bird about the size of a large hen, with large feet and are omniverous. Unfortunately being flightless they are another of our native bird species that are easy prey to various introduced animals, especially while nesting. In NZ's ecological system they have a similar role to a rat.
We had a wonderful evening for our walk and our Guide, Sally was an ex Guide Leader. She pointed out lots of native trees to us and told us a bit about the history of the area that the sanctuary is in. I would highly recommend this walk for any other units in Wellington, from Brownies to Ranger age.
20 Mar
We were missing half our unit as they are on a school camp - so we had a catchup clause evening and did some fun things that are easier to do with a small group.
Some singing
WAGGGS general knowledge
Chocolate game
Kim's game
National Anthem
27 Mar - No Guides (Easter weekend)

April / Aperira

03 Apr
Faith - looking at organisations that promote peace (not completed)
Some self awareness / self esteem type work
10 Apr
Girls spent the evening in patrols working on the Patrol Faith patch.
17 Apr - No Guides (school holidays)
24 Apr - No Guides (school holidays)

Term 2 1997

May / Mei

01 May
Enrolment - Margie
Knots revision
It took us ages to do the enrolment as it has been a long time since the last one.
08 May
Enrolment - Joanne
Heritage and Leisure clauses:
Making butter - we did decide we prefer store bought - but it was fun making it anyway.
Soap carving - some of the girls are very creative :)
Making candles - not very successfully - we tried an experimental way. Never mind :) We all had fun!

15 May
Night-time games
We did an activity using reflective bike tape on cards. Anne drew a map of the area we were using wth all the major structures and trees drawn onit. Then she went up early and stuck the cards with the tape around and marked them on her master map. Each patrol was given a map and had to find as many of the cards as they could and mark on their map where they were using a legend that they created. They did not remove the cards - just marked down where they were. To make it tricky the cards were different colours and some were worth more than others depending on where they were hidden.
This game gave skills in basic map reading - and in using / creating a map legend. It also made them work as a team.
We also did a little bit of star spotting, although it was too late in the evening to see Hale-Bopp. We did work out which direction South was using the Southern Cross and the Ponters.
We also played a simple stalking game (I sent them through gorse and none of the girls told me until later!!! Ow!!!!!)
22 May
First Aid Badge - Red Cross instructor (Roger :) )
Had a good evening - all the girls will get their first aid badge when I get their crosswords back & check their first aid kits (for Jnr First Aid) and Madeline will have to wait until we do Jnr First Aid again as it is a prerequisite.
29 May
Lifeskills:
Holding a recipe evening - everyone to bring along a favourite food that they have cooked and the recipe.
Framing photos we have taken ourselves in origami frames.
Final knots for outdoor clause - round turn and 2 half hitches & sheepshank.
Played a game using 2 different senses.

19 June

25 June

July / Hurae

3July
Did a conflict resolution roleplaying game which involved debating and negotiating.(F1, LS41). Enrolled Madeline
10 July - No Guides (school holidays)
17 July - No Guides (school holidays)

Term 3 1997

24 July
Played new game "God created this Earth - Be nice!"
Unit Heritage Challenge Patch - Made Girl Peace Scout uniforms out of newspaper, measured things with our handspans & strides, and stood to attention while we sang "God save the Queen".
We were missing a lot of the younger girls (with no apologies! Grrrrr!)
31 July
A lot of the girls were involved in the choir part of a children's arts festival combining many of the Wellington schools. The rest of us went glow worm spotting with the brownies in the botanic gardens. We learnt that glow worms are special because they are only found in NZ & Australia, that the use their lights to catch insects in the sticky threads they let down, and that they cocoon and turn into small flys as the next stage of their lifecycle. We heard a ruru (morepork) - a native owl which was very special and learnt a little about some of the trees in the gardens as well, and admired some of the sculptures that make use of natural forms and weather.

August / Akuhata

06 Aug
We had Guides on a Wednesday as it was our District AGM - our unit ran a sausgae sizzle as a fundraiser for girls going to YAP and we used our glow in the dark eyes for an outdoor activity which many of the girls did even though the weather was terrible :)
14 Aug
Did the Provincial badge clause in heritage - made cut out booklets which explained what the different parts of it mean. We also finished off our first aid badge by doing the improvised stretcher clause - (also a sevice clause). We didn't carry anyone on our stretchers though as we had to make them short so that we had enough poles for both group. Elaine did a linguistics questionaire for one of her papers with the girls (it was interesting :) )
21 Aug
Heritage clauses - family tree and where our families came from marked on a map.
Finishing off the cookbook so we can all get copies! Decorating the pages with black and white pictures.
Elaine is away for a couple of weeks as her parents are visiting from the US and she is going on a tour of the South Island with them. Lucky thing!!!!!!! *grin*
28 Aug
Held an "other abilities evening" where everyone was given a disability of some type and had a set of tasks to complete including tying knots and making something out of salt dough

September / Hepetema

04 Sept & 11 Sept
Elaine did the Maori Badge with all of us over 2 weeks. We also made cards to send to Princes' William and Harry after the death of Princess Diana in Paris.
18 Sept
Chocolate night - We had lots of fun decorating chocolate cakes (including one for Anne G whose birthday was this week) and playing chocolate games (The Chocolate Game, Poison Pebbles). We also made very yummy chocolate fondue and by the end of the evening some of us were bouncing off the walls :)
25 Sept - No Guides (We had hoped to play a really neat wide game but in the end we couldn't get the equipment we needed).

October / Oketopa

02 Oct - No Guides (school holidays)
09 Oct - No Guides (school holidays)

Term 4 1997

16 Oct
We made sherbet and then had a theatresports evening where we played various theatresports games
23 Oct
Went for a Guide Law walk to Tinakori Hill to get firewood for fires on Sat week. Elizabeth joined our Guide company from Brownies, and Heather came along for the first time to help
30 Oct
Had a quiz on Guiding playing human Naughts and Crosses. Made string art angels out of cotton on cardboard. Finished off the Cookbook (finally!!!! :) ) and read the letter sent to us from the Prince of Wales office at St James Palace in London in response to our cards. Elaine's last night at Guides - she's off home in about 10 days.

November / Noema

06 Nov - No Guides(school social)
13 Nov
Made baby tuataras out of beads for a friend to take as swaps on a guiding trip overseas. This was some service for the girls, and also started a craze at school with one guide actually selling tuataras to other kids! We also planned what we would do for end of year.
20 Nov
Girls planned what they were going to cook next week
27 Nov
Cookout at Huntleigh - One patrol made hotdogs, the other made hamburger type things- both worked well. Heather and Anne had fish and veges cooked in tinfoil which was delicious.

December / Tihema

06 Dec
Went 10 pin bowling - lots of fun even though our booking had been lost!
13 Dec
We made presents and decorations - soap with stickers on top and felt flowers. We also cooked s'mores *yummy*

Camps & Indoor Holidays

Camps
We had an overnight camp for the Senior Guides planned for March - which went really well despite a few last minute hiccups as to venue. We went up to Hokio Beach and had a very relaxed time. The girls have now either left Guiding or moved on to Rangers - (not because of the camp I hasten to add :) )
