"Looking Our Best" -
We did the “Circle of Friends” compliment activity,
had a “color party” to learn which season brings out our best features, learned
how to keep our skin healthy and had a visit from an Avon beauty advisor who
taught us how to accessorize with jewelry and scarves.
"Media Magic" -
We completed three activities from the Junior Handbook,
Chapter 3, "It’s Great to Be a Girl", to learn about the media’s influence on
our lives. We learned how fashion
magazines unrealistically shape our image of what is beautiful, how photos of
fashion models are digitally retouched and how commercials use celebrities to
promote their products.
"Career Exploration" as in the Just For Girls website -
we learned about
non-traditional careers for women with a visit from a local Marine
officer. He spoke to us about the role
of the Marines in protecting our freedoms, about the use of computer and
satellite technology in today’s military and about military career
opportunities for women.
"Service to Our Country" -
We did a service project to send a “care package” to sailors
serving our country in Operation Enduring Freedom. We sent handmade thank you notes,
decorated patriotic pens and
Girl Scout cookies to San Diego based sailors onboard ship in the Arabian Sea.
Jeweler -
This was our first badge. We did activities toward this badge at
our Service Unit's Brownie Junior Skills Day. Completed, March 2001.
On My Way -
We earned as part of bridging activities as we prepared for
our trip to celebrate bridging to Juniors. We put on a skit imagining what it would be like to travel to a
foreign country where we couldn't speak their language and they couldn't speak ours, we played
packing relay races as we decided what type of clothing would be required for travel to various locals and
climates, we discussed what countries we would like to travel to and what famous wonders of the world we
would like to see there. Then we had a visit by a local travel agent who taught us how travel agents assist
their clients in trip planning, what types are transportation are used, what an itinerary looks like, how the
computer is used in making reservations, how trips are packaged and what education is required to prepare
for a career in the travel industry.
The Cookie Connection -
We prepared for our annual cookie sale by brainstorming
creative new ideas for selling cookies, reviewed safe selling practices,
learned about this year’s varieties and practiced our polite selling
techniques. We also decided to donate
some of the cookies we’ve purchased as a service project to welcome new
families in our neighborhood, including two families of sailors serving in
Afghanistan who are new to the San Diego area and far from their extended
families in Hawaii.
The Junior Aide Award -
Ginny, Serena, Christina, Lindsey, Cosette and Hayley earned
this leadership award. They helped
Daisy Girl Scout Troop 8062 earn their Daisy Learning Petal for “Be a Sister to
Every Girl Scout”. The girls paired
with the Daisy scouts to work on a service project to decorate a wreath for the
San Diego Wild Animal Park’s Festival of Lights celebration, then accompanied
them on a field trip to the event.
