Daisy Girl Scout Troop 2470
At our parent meeting in October, troop parents voted to buy & use the Daisy Scrapbook. We do an activity in the scrapbook at the beginning of each meeting. This serves as a gathering activity, giving the girls something fun to do until all the 'stragglers' arrive. The girls are also encouraged to do scrapbook activities at home with their parents.
We have a read-aloud story at snack time, usually relating to the day's main activity. Parents have been very helpful with choosing & reading the stories & this has quickly become something the girls enjoy & expect.

October Was Making Friends Month
In October, our emphasis was on getting to know one another. We played a variation of "Hot Potato" as a getting-to-know-you game. We also learned to form a Friendship Circle. The girls loved the "Me In Paper" idea from the Daisy Leader Book.

Family Traditions Featured in November
November meetings centered around family customs & traditions. A highlight of the month was when a quilter visited us. She brought several of her own smaller quilts for the girls to examine, including one that had not yet been quilted so that the girls could easily see the layers. Several of the girls also brought in quilted items with special meaning to their families & were given a show & tell opportunity. Then, each girl made her own tiny quilt! Mothers had prepared the fabric in advance by cutting scraps into geometric shapes. The girls used these shapes to form their own designs that they then glued onto a large piece of felt. They were thrilled with their own creativity!

December Was A Very Busy Month!
We had another special guest this month. A gardener visited with us & demonstrated to the girls how to create their own one of a kind centerpiece. This was an inexpensive way for the girls to explore some natural materials during a cold winter month. Each family brought interesting & attractive items from their yards, such a pine branches & cones, acorns, pretty 'weeds.' Using a small piece of floral foam as the base, the girls arranged the materials until they were pleased with their centerpieces. These were truly spectacular! We'll probably use this idea again, maybe for a different season.

Our Investiture Was In January
The troop was very excited to get together again after the holidays. At our first meeting this month, we made 'Peanut Butter Playdoh.' After a few brave girls took the first bite of this icky stuff, all the girls agreed that it was delicious!
Our Investiture was held on January 23, 1997. Our ceremony was a simple one, with the mothers pinning their daughters. It was important to me that the parents be involved in this special ceremony--after all, without their help, we couldn't have a troop! Afterwards, everyone enjoyed the special snack provided by the family of one girl who was celebrating her 6th birthday.
